1 c. scaled milk
1 c. boiling water
1 T. butter
2 T. shortening
2 1/2 t. salt
2 T. sugar
1 pkg. dry yeast dissolved in 1/4 c. warm water
6 c. flour
Put shortening, butter, sugar, and salt in bowl. Add liquids. When yeast is dissolved add to liquids and add 3 cups flour. Mix with knife and add remaining flour gradually using just enough to prevent sticking to hands. Turn out onto floured board leaving bowl clean. Knead until mixture is smooth and elastic to the touch and bubbles may be seen under the surface. Return to bowl. Cover with cloth and let rise until double. Bake in 425 degree oven for 15 minutes then reduce heat to 350 and bake 30-35 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.
